Algiers, My Home Town (Louisiana Parish Histories Series)
Published in Hardcover by Pelican Pub Co (December, 1999)
Average review score:

When it comes to Algiers, LA nobody knew it like Remy Dixon. For those looking for the history of Algiers (that town on the Westbank of the Mississippi across from New Orleans) this book takes a peek at the past and not so past. This the 3rd of Mr. Dixon's books was completed by his family after his death which probably means that no more books on this subject will come to print. If it weren't for Remy Dixon most of these stories would have been lost. If this book is still available and you have even a mild couriosity about this "part of New Orleans apart from New Orleans" then buy it, read it, and pass it down to your kids.

Amelina Carrett : Bayou Grand Coeur, Louisiana 1863

Average review score:

A good American Diaries book.Thirteen-year-old Amelina, who is Cajun, is an orphan. Since she was eight she has lived with her uncle on his small house on the bayou. But now it's 1863, the Civil War is creeping closer to Bayou Grand Coeur, and Amelina discovers a hurt Yankee. Helping him will risk her own life. Can she do what is right? I enjoyed this book. It was very exciting and historically accurate

And Then There Were Two (Morris, Gilbert. Dani Ross Mystery, Bk. 2.)
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Dani Ross MysteriesI've read all six of the Danielle Ross Mysteries and am glad to see them re-releasing them (although apparently under new titles). Danielle (Dani) Ross is a modern day sleuth who faces all the things we career women face in the sometimes "man's world" of business, without losing herself. Gilbert Morris is an entertaining writer of good mysteries that keep you guessing right to the end! I highly recommend the series, and I hope Mr. Morris continues to write a LOT more in this series.

Average review score:

A must for Louisiana ResearchersAn invaluable source for those wishing to research Louisiana families. It gives a short history of the name, where it originated, known progenitor(s) and other family information. It is a good place to start for the beginner and a sound reference work for the more advanced genealogist.

The Awakening: Complete, Authoritative Text With Biographical & Historical Contexts, Critical History, & Essays from Five Contemporary Critica. Perspectives (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism)
Published in Paperback by Bedford/St. Martin's (December, 1992)
Average review score:

Great Story to Read and Discuss at SchoolThis book has a lot of literary elements in it which in some cases can be identified very easily when being discussed in class. This book is a much easier book to read and understand because the text and the wording is easy, but not too easy. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about romance and how men see women duting that period of time.

Baldwin's Guide to Museums of Louisiana
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (December, 1998)
Average review score:

A terrific guide bookMany a genealogist's loved ones have balked at the suggestion that a family vacation could profitably be spent visiting courthouses and cemeteries. The Baldwins, inveterate museum-eers, personally visited most of the more than 170 Louisiana museums, large and small, from the Cabildo and Presbytere in New Orleans (where you can see the Emperor Napoleon?s death mask) to the Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter exhibit at Mooringsport, his home town. They also accompany most of the listings (which are alphabetical by city) with historical sketches and and other local information. The Germantown Colony and Museum in Minden honors the Harmonist/Utopian settlers of 1835 and the book's entry includes a brief history of the colony and its principals, while the description of the Gary J. Hebert Memorial Lockhouse in Plaquemine includes considerable information about the lock system and the interactive exhibits presented there. Also included is complete information on exact locations, hours of operation, costs of admission, and often the name of the curator or director. This is a first-rate guide which will find a place in the glove compartment of many weekend genealogists.

Bayou
Published in Unknown Binding by Inkwell Publications ()
Average review score:

Bayou will swamp youBayou is a collection of short stories from the depths of the Bayous in southwest Louisiana. THe mostly ghostly themes capture and explain some of the misteries of the region. The illustrations are an added bonus. I was pleasantly surprised to see the "Blue Dog" and then realized that the illustrations are by Rodrigue, the creator of the famous "Blue Dog".

Bayou Folk: And, a Night in Acadie (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Kate Chopin Short StoriesI loved this book! It is a collection of short stories, originally published singly in magazines. They provide a snapshot of life in Louisiana in the late 19th century, and truly fulfill this reader's desire to be transported to a different time and place.
In each story, often only a few pages long, the author paints a vivid picture a the characters, their circumstances, and motivations.
The theme of all the stories is change. Although the turns of events described are generally not monumental, they are often the catalyst for a significant change in a character. And sometimes the point is that there is no change.
